The Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe is a sovereign nation, which exercises full governmental control over its land and resources. The Port Gamble S’Klallam reservation is located in north Kitsap County, Washington. The entire reservation is owned completely by the Tribe which paid for the land out of settlement funds. The reservation was set aside for the exclusive use and benefit of the Port Gamble S'Klallam people in 1938 and has remained in 100% tribal trust status. There is no individual or private ownership of land on the reservation.

The Tribe is a signatory to the Point No Point Treaty of 1855 with the United States Government and retains all rights not ceded in that treaty. The Tribe exercises its aboriginal, treaty-protected rights to fish at usual and accustomed grounds and stations and to hunt and gather on all open and unclaimed lands. The Tribe protects its natural resources on and off the reservation through careful management and vigorous enforcement.

A six member Tribal Council that was delegated legislative authority by the General Council governs the Tribe.
